Social Enterprise City

Salford – the North-West’s first Social Enterprise City

In May 2015 Salford was designated a ‘Social Enterprise Place’ by Social Enterprise UK (SEUK) the national trade body for social enterprise.

Social Enterprise Places are areas where social enterprise activity is thriving. From quarters, towns, cities and zones, areas around the UK are declaring themselves as social enterprise places committed to investing in the sector. SEUK is recognising these ‘hotspots’ of social enterprise activity by awarding them with the Social Enterprise Place badge, celebrating their achievements and supporting them to grow.

Salford’s status as a Social Enterprise City was secured after a steering group comprising local social enterprises, The Business Group and Salford CVS developed a plan to convince SEUK of our credentials! This included mapping social enterprise activity in Salford, agreeing some key objectives, organising a briefing event and also a public launch.

Key objectives

your shout icon

1.  Your Shout

Hold a series of events with residents across the City to see what they view as the challenges in their local area and how these can be tackled by social enterprises. This can also be used to garner people’s understanding of social enterprise and social value.

social knowledge

2.  Social Knowledge Exchange

Set-up an ideas bank; an online repository where people can add ideas for social enterprises or interventions and then these can be worked on/carried out by those with the resources to make an impact. Will also provide a way for social enterprises to share information on best practice.

enterprise trail

3. Enterprise History Trail

Build an enterprise history trail looking at how historic businesses, people and events have shaped (and can shape) social impact throughout Salford.

The briefing event took place on 23rd April 2015 at Ordsall Hall with the public launch following soon afterwards on 20th May 2015 at the University of Salford’s Media City campus.

12 months on and things are going from strength to strength, with the stakeholder group meeting monthly and with work having commenced on the social enterprise history trail and a new website created https://socialknowledgeexchange.co.uk/
