What is Social Enterprise?
A social enterprise is a business with social, financial and environmental objectives built into the heart of its business model. Unlike traditional businesses, social enterprises reinvest most of their profits back into their mission or community, rather than prioritising profit for shareholders and owners. These diverse enterprises deliver goods and services in a wide range of business sectors, including health and social care, education, arts and culture, community development, sport and recreation, catering and environmental projects, to name but a few.
These businesses make a significant contribution to economic equality, social justice, and environmental sustainability.
There are over 131,000 social enterprises in the UK, employing around 2.3 million people and generating a collective turnover of £78 billion.
