Organisation description: At Cancer Care Diaspora we support many families from minority ethnic communities who experience a lot of racial inequalities and economic poverty leading to a major problem of poor health, late diagnosis of illnesses such as cancer; low cancer screening uptake and other cultural barriers which cause real issues for these individuals hence people from this group tend to present late with cancer symptoms and have very poor outcomes of the disease. We have been creating awareness about the benefits of early intervention; taking up cancer screenings to increase chances of survival and better outcomes since our charity was started in May 2016. In over seven years of existence we have supported many families navigating cancer by providing practical support tailored to each family or individual. We host community awareness sessions quarterly to ensure continuous reminder and education in the Black, Asian and other minority ethnic communities (BAME) and we also provide weekly drop in sessions in two centres, one in Longsight and the other in Harpurhey and we are opening two more centres in Moston and Salford before the end of 2024. Our objectives at Cancer Care Diaspora include:
1. Raising Awareness: Promoting and protecting the health of the public through provision of information and raising of public understanding of the nature, causes, diagnosis, prevention, treatment; and cure of all forms of cancer. 2. Developing Cancer Champions: Our cancer champions are at the heart of our cancer awareness and support programs. Our Cancer Champions are everyday people who volunteer their time to fight cancer. 3. Providing Support: We offer support throughout the whole diagnosis; at the beginning; during and after treatment. Cancer can affect everything: health; relationships; finances and more. We seek to normalise the conversations about cancer in the BAME community by: i. Providing individuals; carers and families with Information & Advice and signposting. ii. Organising weekly fitness sessions for people recovering from cancer and their carers. iii. Organising events; conferences and workshops to raise awareness; promote proactive self testing and encouraging early intervention. iv. Providing practical support for people living with cancer including home visits; help with shopping; provision of food parcels; budgeting; etc. v. Working with other organisations; churches; mosques and statutory agencies. We continue to encourage healthy lifestyle among our service users and the community in general. Our work is delivered mainly by a team of committed volunteers supported by 5 members of staff who are also supported by a passionate Board of Trustees. We have around 30 volunteers who hail from diverse background with lots of experience which makes our delivery fit for purpose in a person centred way.
