Organisation description: Beanstalk believe life is better when everyone can read well and express themselves with confidence. Sadly, last year over 63,000 children left primary school unable to read to the expected level. Illiteracy is a persistent national problem in the UK. Our challenge is to ensure that every child leaves school with the skills and confidence to reach their true potential and control their own lives.
Beanstalk is a national literacy charity that recruits, trains and supports volunteers to work in primary schools with children who have fallen behind with their reading. Beanstalk's vision is that all children and young people have the essential skills they need to grow up and lead successful lives.
Each Beanstalk reading helper supports three children and sees each child for two 30 minute sessions a week, during term-time, for a whole year. Together, they read, play and talk. With Beanstalk's support the child's approach to learning and enjoying reading is often transformed. A reading helper volunteer is matched with a local school within a 5 mile radius from their home or place of work. We complete DBS checks and cover travel expenses. We have on-going support and training for all our volunteers.
