Organisation description: Bikes for Ukraine
Sending Bikes not Bombs
“SistaCycle” is the brainchild of Irina Karginova, a war refugee from Ukraine currently living with her sponsor Christine Sherburne in Salford in the UK on the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
When Irina talked to her mum back in Kiev about the difficulties she and other women were facing trying to get around since the war started, she wanted to help.
Because of the war public transport has all but collapsed, is over full and expensive and women in particular are finding it increasingly difficult to shop, get their children to school, visit and care for relatives etc. Also Volunteers need bikes to deliver aid.
She decided to ask the people of the UK to donate bicycles which will be collected and shipped out to areas in the Ukraine initially in the outlying villages around Kiev.
She has partnered with an organisation “U-cycle” in Kiev who are already trying to provide bicycles to volunteers (mostly women) who are delivering aid to vulnerable people and they are delighted to help distribute bicycles to those who need them most.
Also, the Ukrainian Centre in Manchester has asked her for help in sourcing bicycles for their refugees so that they are able to get to interviews etc without relying on expensive public transport.
Longer term, Irina would like to help “U-Cycle” to set up repair kitchens in Ukraine so that women can learn to repair and maintain their bikes themselves.
Any help, donations of Bicycles, transport storage, money, tools, bicycle spares etc will be most gratefully received.
