Organisation description: Viking Re-enactment in Salford (VRS) was formed to support the work and activities of Ydalir Vikings who are the Salford branch of a national charity - The Vikings. This society is open for public membership and their aims are to increase the knowledge and experience of members and the public of life as a Viking in the period between the sack of Lindisfarne(793) and the Norman Conquest in 1066. We meet each Tuesday evening in Beesley Green Community Centre to practice skills, learn and explore all things Viking - with the emphasis on authenticity rather than the TV series!
We organise shows in the North West of England to demonstrate to the public and share our knowledge; we visit schools etc to show and tell about life in the period; we have large national shows across the country, where we and other members of the society, live the life of a viking - a close as we can - and demonstrate the living history and combat knowledge we have. We have lots of links with academic and knowledgeable professionals to check authenticity with and many members of the group are very skilled and knowledgeable in the life skills, combat and sailing in the period. Our activities/interests include:
Combat - sheild-wall, spear, sword and axe fighting, archery, other missile techniques,
Textile production from fleece and flax, spinning, tablet weaving, weighted loom, lucet, cordage making from plants and animal products, dying from natural sources
Food - cooking styles as authentically as we can, using equipment and techniques available at the time. Producing and using the ingredients we know were available in the period and in the geographic areas we reenact.
Herbal and spiritual use in health in the period
Anything else relating to the viking era - which is incredibly wide ranging
