Organisation description: Maytree is a suicide prevention charity providing 24-7 befriending support for anyone in the UK over the age of 18 who is in suicidal ideation. Our mission is to restore hope and alleviate suffering in the individuals that we support. The service is delivered by a team of trained volunteers, overseen by a small staff team, in a safe space conducive to reflection and reinvigoration. Since 2002, as the UK's sole provider of free non-medical, residential support to persons in suicidal ideation, we have supported over 24,000 people.
At the heart of our method, is the conviction that for a person to "grow", their environment must be genuine, accepting and empathetic. Essentially, our belief is that a person first requires a facilitating environment to reach a point of change in their difficult situation. The experience of receiving Maytree support can have a transformative and profound effect on an individual’s state of mind, leading them to make the decision to live. Support is the operative word: all guests are listened to without judgement.
Our telephone and e-mail services are available to all UK residents, and our face-to-face befriending support is delivered in a volunteer-serviced, North London house. We are in the process of opening a second Maytree house in Bury, Manchester by the beginning of April 2022, which will be the beginnings of spreading out our face-to-face support and impact to areas including Salford. The aim is that – just as in London - we will offer free, five-day stays to over-18s in suicidal crisis.
