Throughout COVID-19 lockdown Y&B became aware of a rising need to reach young people aged 14-20 with addictions to drugs and alcohol. Without accountability and access to support mechanisms during lockdown, those with addictions have increased their drugs and alcohol use which has had a negative impact on their mental health. For cultural reasons there is low digital access and therefore for many the sense of isolation has been acute. The Y&B project will provide support through:
• A drug awareness and education course
• Self-awareness and mental health course
• One-to-one support
Through a recent survey it was found that during Covid-19 lockdown there was an escalation of drug use, with over 65% surveyed saying it was due to lack of structure and self-isolation. The project will support two groups, one for male and one for female members of the community
The primary benefit of this project is for those who have addictions and suffering from poor mental health through an improvement in their wellbeing. The wider community will also benefit from a reduction in groups of youths hanging out on the streets, associated petty crime and safer streets.
