Organisation description: Paperweight provide free, immediate practical assistance for those in crisis within the Jewish community, due to one or more of the following : death, dementia, divorce, poverty, isolation, discrimination, injustice and neglect.
Due to Covid-19, some jobs will disappear permanently as business fail or reduce their workforce, some jobs will be lost temporally and will hopeful come back in the future.
Some business sectors such as hospitality, may never recover if social distancing is maintained for several months ahead. This means loss of business to the proprietor, redundancies for the employees and the service providers of this business lose out too.
When the interest or credit card / mortgage holidays come to an end, the reality of unsustainable loans will hit hard. A new financial landscape is emerging and will impact the low paid and the renters.
Ever for many families where the relationship was ok beforehand, this will brings tensions and grievances, for families that were under strain beforehand it will make matters worse.
Many families are suffering from bereavements and do not know what practical steps they need to take with registering deaths, will, probate, bank accounts etc.
The certain consequence of this is that Paperweight's Family Law Support and Advocacy Unit will certainly also be in additional demand.
Paperweight needs to have sufficient capacity to continue working with our standard cross section of clients, as well as managing this new cohort - many of whom will have had little if no prior exposure to the welfare system, have an awareness of their entitlements, debt nor dealing with the consequences of a death. This will undoubtedly be overwhelming for them. Paperweight will help alleviate the stresses and strains of their new circumstance and will guide them wherever possible to self-reliance and less anxiety.
Our free services are available for all those needing guidance on legal, financial and welfare issues. In these very testing times, we are particularly aware that people will turn to us for:
• Benefit checks, benefit applications and maintenance, appeals and tribunal representation.
• Advocacy with the DWP
• Assistance with domestic finances, budget planning and debt
• Regular updates on the support available from banks, building societies, government agencies and the community
• Dealing with finances after a bereavement including bank accounts, probate and wills
• Family law, Civil law, and Power of Attorney.
• Family mediation
