Organisation description: SAS is a constituted not for profit organisation which was established in 1965 in order to provide a forum for shared learning on the subject of astronomy and related topics for its membership. The inaugural meet of SAS was 6th September 1971 at which time SAS moved into a bespoke observatory building on Chaseley field, off Chaseley Road Salford.
SAS is an inclusive society dedicated to the safe development and understanding of astronomy, STEM and the sustainable environment. SAS meets each Wednesday evening to conduct SAS business and host visits by interested parties. During Sept-April SAS host ‘free to all’ lectures at Swinton Gateway on topics related to Astronomy. We also open the observatory to the membership and wider interest groups at times of special astronomical events.
Our future vision anticipates SAS having an increased outreach into the local community via strong linkages with local education and local interest groups to support the development of Astronomy, STEM and associated topics in parallel with a focus on the sustainable environment and health/wellbeing.
