Categories of Work: Substance misuse

Organisation description: THOMAS delivers a range of holistic recovery focused services, which take people from within prison or hospital, through detox and residential rehabilitation into community based provision. Our current rehabilitation and recovery houses are in Blackburn, Salford and Bolton. The THOMAS dynamic is a psychosocial environment combining social learning, cognition and the 12 step programme. Inextricably intertwined with the recovery process is building a social environment of positive connections with others that can ignite an inner connection of self-awareness and self-identification.
THOMAS offers drop in facilities, assertive outreach, and recovery programmes incorporating cognitive, social and interpersonal approaches, and support with wider issues associated with addiction. This includes residential programmes, support for those living in their own homes and community-based programmes.
THOMAS runs a drop-in at our base in Blackburn Monday to Friday providing a lunchtime meal for all those who need one and supporting those who attend with advice and referral into our own or other services.
THOMAS is developing its social enterprise and therapeutic work activity schemes. This is a business methodology offering real services and jobs but all of the outcomes (even profit) are intended to support social values and create opportunities for community regeneration and (in THOMAS’s case) those who are living in deprivation, suffering from addiction or those who are marginalised. One of the main benefits of THOMAS operating social enterprises is the therapeutic work activity they can offer to our participants and those in recovery. There are so many proven and recognised health benefits from working with your hands in a productive, creative and positive way.
Currently THOMAS is concentrating on the business of furniture restoration and shabby chic. THOMAS is operating three furniture restoration workshops/retail outlets in Accrington, Blackburn and Swinton but hopes to diversify into other activities in the longer term.
