Organisation description: SALFORD Volleyball Club have set up and deliver specialised sitting volleyball sessions in order to become a more inclusive club being able to offer opportunities for all to take part in the sport.
The sessions are available to all in the community with an added focus on former Armed Forces personnel, in particular those who have sustained physical and/or psychological injuries, in a move to support inclusion into the community.
The club have linked with various organisations who have consulted and worked with a number of other local and national organisations and individuals who have stated this is something they would like to do. The following groups have been consulted with:
• Salford disability forum
• Invictus Games
• The Veterans Garage
• SALFORD Community Leisure
Consultation took over the past 12 months where visits were made to the above organisations to measure the potential take up of participation. It is planned that further organisations, such as the Royal British Legion, Defence Medical Welfare Service, Future 4 Heroes, and Walking With The Wounded will be made aware of the activity and its content whereby referrals can be made and knowledge of its development passed on an ongoing basis. It is our plan to now continue the consultation with the local communities of Salford to offer a sport accessible to those who may have injuries / illnesses that do not allow them full access to general contact / non-contact sports.
Delivering an inclusive session (one session per week) will enable people to try a new sport and in some cases play at a club level, and for the Armed Forces personnel an opportunity to train towards the Invictus Games, and for everyone, the opportunity to aim for the Paralympics. The club anticipate that providing the links to the Invictus Games in the future would be the first club in Salford to do so.
As well as the physical benefits of leading a healthy, active lifestyle, the sport will prevent people from becoming socially isolated due to their disability and give them a focus together with supporting part of their therapy.
Salford Volleyball Club would like the project to be long term and self sufficient in the future. In order to attract players, publicity will be enhanced, both hard copy and electronically as well as through various social media networks, in particular targeting those above who the initial consultation took place with. The club are also part of the Salford Sports network so the session will be advertised on this website. The website has approximately 1000 views per month and 26,000 pages are viewed a year.
Salford (Sitting) Volleyball Team took part in a series of Grand Prix Tournaments over the past year (2018/19) where teams from across the UK took part. It was a chance to play among the best teams in the land and proved an essential part of our 'inclusion' ethic.
Our base is Irlam and Cadishead Leisure Centre, Liverpool Road, IRLAM.
