Organisation description: In 2019 PSS will celebrate its 100th birthday. As an organisation we developed some of the best known names in community support including Age Concern, the Citizen’s Advice Bureau and Legal Aid. Today our team is continuing our legacy of innovation. We sit alongside Local Government and NHS services plugging the gaps and providing ‘on the ground’ support for a wide array of people. Our aim is simple and has been at the heart of what we do for a long time: to make the lives of those we work with better.
PSS developed the first shared lives service of its kind in Liverpool over 30 years ago but today it is nationwide and run by many different organisations. For us the service has shown real results, creating positive lifestyles for vulnerable adults and it now provides nearly 20% of support for adults with a learning disability in the UK.
What do we do?
• At PSS we manage the service from the start,
• we recruit & train carers
• We offer a programme of training and support for our carers, which helps maintain high levels of support.
• Most importantly, we are there 24/7 to help our carers along the way.
Our carers come from all walks of life. Some people have had experience caring for others in the past, maybe as part of their career. Some have grown up children who have left home, some have large families who help to care, and others live on their own with the person they support.
Our carers don’t have to have any previous experience of care, they just have to be keen to learn and take part in our training programme. This programme will ensure they are specially equipped to support the person they are sharing their life with.
