Organisation description: North West Media Ltd (NWM) is an independent, value led, not-for-profit company which operates as Unity Radio, a community radio station. The station broadcasts dance and urban music to target audience of 15-40-year olds across Greater Manchester on 92.8FM, DAB, online and through its smartphone application. In 2015 Unity Radio was granted a 5-year extension to its OFCOM license.
History
Beginning life as Pirate 106FM in 2001, the station was formed with strong community roots, launching as a weekend only service transmitting UK Garage, Hip Hop, and Drum and Bass from the inner-city Pirate-home of Moss Side’s 7 Sisters.
In 2005 North West Media was incorporated and the organisation was awarded its Ofcom licence in 2008, launching Unity Radio officially in December 2010.
Since then the station has continued to grow from strength to strength, working with and representing leading local, UK and international artists, labels and brands. The station has also relocated to MediaCityUK, where it broadcasts alongside media giants BBC and ITV.
A youth-focused organisation
In memory of co-founder Robert Hargreaves, who was tragically murdered in 2001, the station has always been committed to using music and creative arts activities to positively engage hard to reach and vulnerable young people. The primary objective of these activities is to increase the self-esteem of the young people that we engage with and to act as a gateway for new lifestyle, education, employment and skills choices.
