Three months into volunteering Diana said: “I feel much calmer, my panic attacks have reduced and my confidence is building. I feel like a different person, I didn’t think I had it in me. I wake up with a smile on my face now, I don’t lock myself away and I love talking to the older people and doing craft activities with them. I’m using skills I didn’t think I had. Six months ago I never thought I would be doing anything like this, I was in a dark place and I felt helpless, but now I might be 4ft 11 but I feel 6ft tall.

Case study 2: Bev, 65

Although Bev is actually helping other people through being a Wellbeing Champion, she views her role as an activity which helps her by giving her time away from caring, but remaining active doing something she enjoys: “It gives me me-time where I can continue to do the kind of task I enjoy. It`s given me my purpose back after retiring. I`ve got knowledge and am putting it back into use again. I feel useful and have a smile on my face when I go out the front door. I can step forward and do my bit.”

Case study 3: Christine, 50

Volunteering with support has given Christine more confidence and her association with Salford CVS and Volunteer Centre Salford has enabled her to apply for funding via Salford CVS. Christine secured some funding through the Salford Together Neighbourhood Fund which enabled her to organise and manage a wellbeing event for older people from her local community.

Case study 4: Colin, 69

Colin became a volunteer after participating on a Tech and Tea course at his local library. The course helps older people acquire new online skills and stay connected. After completing the course himself Colin decided to volunteer to support other older people get online.
