That’s not love – it’s domestic abuse

That’s not love – it’s domestic abuse

A campaign to help people recognise the signs of domestic abuse launched in Salford on Valentine’s Day. 'Love –Domestic abuse is' sends out 14 messages about how perpetrators control their victims.

These include emotional blackmail, cutting people off from their family and friends, controlling the purse strings so victims are left without money and the classic promises that violence won’t happen again – until the next time.

The campaign also points out that love is not stalking and harassment, undermining people’s confidence and threatening to harm them or yourself if they try to leave.

It follows a social media campaign in November in which 16 survivors of domestic abuse sent messages of hope to people still in abusive relationships. It reached more than 516,400 people and over 600 men and women called Salford Women’s Aid or checked out their website as a result.

Innovate and change – how can we tackle hunger and food waste in Greater Manchester

Monday 2 March 2020, 12pm – 4.30pm at GRUB, 50 Red Bank, Cheetham Hill, M4 4HF.

Greater Manchester partners are hosting an Innovation and Change workshop to identify city-region actions that will push Greater Manchester towards a sustainable food future, tackling food poverty without increasing reliance on surplus/waste food.

We have 4 hours to think creatively about Greater Manchester – what makes our city-region different? How can we be ahead of the curve? What opportunities do we have to increase sustainable, local, ethical food production and consumption? How can we ensure good food provision for certain groups of people at specific times of need e.g. children during school holidays? What opportunities do we have to lift people out of food poverty in a permanent and meaningful way?

Health Secretary faces legal challenge for failing patients with learning disabilities and autism

The Equality and Human Rights Commission have launched a legal challenge against the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care over the repeated failure to move people with learning disabilities and autism into appropriate accommodation.

They have longstanding concerns about the rights of more than 2,000 people with learning disabilities and autism being detained in secure hospitals, often far away from home and for many years.

These concerns increased significantly following the BBC’s exposure of the shocking violation of patients’ human rights at Whorlton Hall, where patients suffered horrific physical and psychological abuse.

Do you support people affected by the criminal justice system?

Do you support people affected by the criminal justice system?

Healthwatch England published two new reports, using the views of over 749,000 people to shine a light on key health and social care issues. Firstly, their annual report 2018-19 'Guided by you' was laid before Parliament.

They also published 'What people want from the next ten years of the NHS', which looks at what 40,000 people said following their network's biggest countrywide engagement exercise.

The evidence gathered has already been shared with local NHS leaders, who will set out how they have used public feedback to improve services. Healthwatch England will be analysing these documents to see where people's input has helped to shape local thinking.

Both documents highlight just how far the Healthwatch network has come. They show the reach, and ability of Healthwatch to find out the views of those who go unheard or unconsidered, and their commitment towards making sure services work for those who use them.

Nature and Ageing Well in Towns and Cities

Nature and Ageing Well in Towns and Cities

This report sets out findings from a three-year research project aiming to understand the benefits and values of urban green infrastructure to older people and how green infrastructure attributes and interventions can best support healthy ageing in urban areas.

The project was conducted in Greater Manchester and run as a partnership between a range of researchers, organisations, practitioners, and community groups. Each brought a different perspective on green infrastructure, health and wellbeing, and how to value the contributions of urban green and blue space for health and wellbeing in later life. The project team also worked with older people, not only as participants but also as co-researchers helping to shape and deliver the programme of work. Findings are presented for the Greater Manchester cityregion but are expected to have wider resonance given that Greater Manchester has many physical, social and economic characteristics shared with other urban areas.
